In a study conducted in the United States, researchers found that a compound in cannabis can impede the progression of severe coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) with acute respiratory syndrome in human lung cells.
University of Chicago Medical Center researcher Marsha Rosner and colleagues discovered that cannabidiol (CBD) and its metabolite 7-OH-CBD slowed or blocked the spread of SARS-CoV-2 in the epithelial cells of the lungs. SARS-CoV-2 is the main active ingredient contained in the COVID-19 variant of SARS-COVID.
In their study, the researchers found that the use of CBD had a remarkable correlation with the decrease in the spread of SARS-CoV-2.
How was this research conducted?
To determine how CBD affects SARS-CoV-2, the researchers pretreated A549-ACE2 lung cells with up to 10 µM (micrometers) of CBD. two hours later they infected these cells with SARS-CoV-2. 48 hours after infection, the researchers analyzed how far SARS-CoV-2 had spread in these cells and whether the CBD had counteracted the spread.
Simultaneously with testing CBD for SARS-CoV-2, the researchers pre-treated some of the lung cells with other cannabinoids to determine the effectiveness of these different cannabinoids in fighting SARS-CoV-2.
Among the cells pretreated with CBD, the spread and replication of SARS-CoV-2 cells was markedly stopped, if not even reduced. Other cannabinoids that were tested in the study were not found to be as effective in slowing the spread of the disease.
Of the cannabinoids tested, CBD proved to be the most effective against the spread of SARS-CoV-2; In addition, 7-OH-CBD, the active ingredient in CBD treatments for epilepsy, has been shown to inhibit the spread of SARS-CoV-2 in A549-ACE2 cells.
In addition to preventing the spread of SARS-CoV-2, CBD also eliminated RNA expression of the coronavirus agent. Among the A549-ACE2 cells treated with CBD, not only was the spread of SARS-CoV-2 stopped, but the CBD also stopped the RNA that codes for the virus’s spike protein, which allows the virus to enter vulnerable cells.
Lower SARS-COV-2 infection rates and CBD intake
The University of Chicago researchers also compared the SARS-CoV-2 incidence rate of patients prescribed CBD with those not prescribed the same prescription.
Of the two groups, patients prescribed CBD had a SARS-CoV-2 incidence rate of 1.2%, while patients who had not been prescribed CBD had an incidence rate of 12%.
