With parts of Australia tightly closed as the country struggles with a resurgence of COVID-19 cases, police are cracking down on those who oppose travel restrictions.

“It just goes to show that some of those in the criminal world are willing to take risks,” Inspector Brad Sprague told Nine News.

Ali Sadeghi-Iman was arrested and charged with trafficking and possession of a commercial quantity of cannabis.

Cannabis laws in Australia differ depending on the region. Australia Capital Territory (ACT) allows small amounts of cannabis to be owned and grown, but federal law still bans recreational cannabis, according to Weedmaps.

In 2016, Australia legalized medical cannabis and the Department of Health’s Office of Drug Control oversees the national medical marijuana program.

Earlier this year, Cate Faehrmann, a member of the Legislative Council of New South Wales, tabled a bill to legalize cannabis and establish the New South Wales Cannabis Authority. According to Pondering Pot, the majority of Australians support the legalization of cannabis, according to a 2019 National Drug Strategy household survey.
