In a recent interview with Business Insider, 26-year-old comedian Dan LaMorte discussed how cannabis helped him take control of his health.

His view of exercise changed a few years ago after using cannabis before a hike. He started adding cannabis to his fitness routine on a regular basis, and suddenly it didn’t seem so bad going to the gym and exercising.

Two years later, he lost 180 pounds and ran his first ultra marathon.

“[Cannabis] was what would get me out the door and a reward system when I got home to relax my legs while I stretch, ”LaMorte told Business Insider. “If it makes running interesting, healthy eating can make it interesting. The next thing I knew was that I was actually enjoying salad. “

Stories like LaMorte’s are more common than you might think. An outdated stereotype of cannabis users is that they often get stuck on the couch with a bag of chips in hand. From anecdotal evidence to longitude studies, however, the data increasingly shows that this perception couldn’t be further from the truth.

According to a study published in Frontiers in Public Health in 2019, people who use cannabis before exercise tend to exercise longer and also enjoy their sessions more. The study found that people who consumed cannabis before exercising exercised an average of 2.5 hours more per week than people who gave up the plant.

“Marijuana relaxes me and enables me to go to a controlled, meditative place,” triathlete Clifford Drusinsky told Men’s Journal in 2014.

Increasingly, other professional athletes are talking about their cannabis use.

Hervé Damas, a former National Football League linebacker turned cannabis doctor, recently shared with The GrowthOp how his own experiences with cannabis helped ease his pain from injury and reduce his anxiety.

But you don’t have to be a professional athlete to see the benefits.

Leland Radovanovic, CEO of Conscious Communications, a cannabis and psychedelic communications strategy company, told Business Insider that cannabis will help reduce his gym-related anxiety.

Radovanovic says that by microdosing cannabis over a pen or vape pen before lifting weights, the mild effects allow him to let go of negative thoughts and focus on his routine.

“The change in mood is subtle,” he said. “Almost like a little weight off my shoulders.”
