Terp Phrases 101 | Hashish now

As legalization progresses (or creeps up) and we learn more about the plant and how to best enjoy it, a slew of new words and scientific terms have made their way into mainstream cannabis culture, and it can be difficult to identify yourself wading through the plant haze and so on.

But don’t worry – your days of carving third-rate definitions out of the internet are over. Here’s an overview of a few terms, each in their own way associated with terpenes (the compounds that give cannabis its taste and smell), from scientific material to slang cannabis use written by Cannabis Now contributors Ed Rosenthal and Greg Zeman.

Study and you won’t leave another focused conversation that feels like the only child in the class who didn’t do the assigned reading.

BHO is an abbreviation for “butane hash oil”; can refer to any number of concentrates derived from butane extraction; can also refer to raw, unpurified, liquid solution of butane and extract bubble hash.

Closed loop

The closed cycle is an extraction approach in which the extraction solvent is recycled and the process is contained in a closed system as opposed to open blasting.

Crystalline refers to the molecular structure of a solid; The more ordered this structure, the more it resembles a crystal. This is the natural state of “pure” cannabinoids, which are solids and which can be purified and refined through recrystallization processes.

Decarboxylation is the removal of a carboxyl that is a carbonate molecule (COOH). When carboxyl molecules are bound to the THC molecule, it is called THCA or THC acid. In this form, THC lacks most of its psychoactivity. Decarboxylation removes the COOH acid molecule and leaves THC behind. Mild heat is often used to convert THCA into THC. This happens with drying, vaporizing and smoking. Some decarboxylation occurs naturally as marijuana heals and ages.

Diamond mining

Diamond mining is also known as “Jar Tech”. This is a simple method for recrystallizing freshly extracted BHO. This process works best with living resin.

Distillate is the refined, high cannabinoid extract made by distilling concentrates. increasingly the most popular option for filling vape pen cartridges.

E-Nagel is an electrical heating element for a beater or nail that is attached to a temperature controller and enables uniform, targeted temperature impressions without a burner. Aside from a quick wipe of a Q-tip, there is no downtime between swabs.

Living resin

Living resin is BHO made using living or flash frozen living material. The higher terpene content makes it an ideal choice for making sauces, sugars and other BHO consistencies that rely on recrystallization.

Nucleation is a natural separation process that occurs in all mixtures. In cannabis concentrates, this means separating the cannabinoid solid from the terpenes, which are natural solvents and basically liquid.

Oil is a collective term referring to cannabis concentrate that is made by solvent extraction and is generally not used for hash or rosin.

Open the blast

Open blasting is the original BHO extraction process. Filling a tube with weeds, blasting butane through the tube, and collecting the material spilled on the other side for rinsing; not really as dangerous as often portrayed, but more or less a non-starter in the current regulatory climate.

Oxidation is the effect of oxygen when it chemically combines with another substance. This happens quickly in the fire, but also happens much more slowly at room temperature. For marijuana and its products, oxidation is a deterioration. The oxygen in the air interacts with marijuana to reduce its THC levels.

do the washing up

Flushing removes a solvent from a solution, as is the case with BHO or CO2 extraction.

Resin glands

Resin glands is the general term for all trichome types in the cannabis plant.

Rosin is the refined product where heat and pressure are applied to raw buds or hashish.

Rosin Tech

Rosin Tech is a mechanical extraction or refinement process for buds or hashish. Heat and pressure are used to coax a strong, full-spectrum aromatic product that can be dabbed.

Shatter is a highly regarded type of BHO that is characterized by its light permeability and brittleness at room temperature. The consistency can range from “real” brittle fractures (such as gold or brown glass) to a juicy snap-and-pull consistency.

Solvent is a substance that dissolves another substance and creates a solution – water is the most basic solvent in the universe; Since cannabinoids and terpenes are oils, the solvents used to extract them include alcohol, petroleum-based liquids, and liquid CO2.

The CO2 extraction below the critical temperature and pressure point of carbon dioxide when it becomes liquid is sub-critical.

In this context, sugar refers to “terp sugar”, a sandy, granular variant of BHO that has a moist appearance and consistency due to the terpene saturation.

Overly critical

Supercritical is an unusual phase that occurs when a substance is held at its critical point or pushed beyond it, when it changes from gas to liquid or the like. A supercritical substance has different properties (solubility, diffusibility) than the same substance as a liquid or gas; It is considered a “cloud”.

Wintering in the bio-industry involves removing waxes from an oil, usually by applying a cold temperature.
