Thai households can now grow six pots of cannabis each to supplement their incomethe country’s health minister said as the first country in the region to legalize medical marijuana further simplified rules to encourage the commercial use of the crop.

Families could form communities to grow marijuana and deliver the crops to public hospitals and government facilities, or use them to create food and cosmetic products as a new source of income, Thailand Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said in a statement Friday.

“Marijuana and hemp are both useful crops and offer locals a new way of generating income,” Anutin said at a marijuana education exhibition in Buriram, 400 kilometers northeast of Bangkok. “We are trying to relax the restrictions to give the public easier access to the facility, but please cooperate and use it properly.”
