“I was working as a professional choreographer and performer when the pandemic hit,” says Michele Shuster. “My entire industry has been badly affected and everyone has had to turn around and find a different way to pay the bills.”

With seven years of experience at David’s Tea and Saje Natural Wellness, returning to retail was a natural option. “A dear friend, Trish Lackey, suggested cannabis,” she said in an email. “I didn’t realize how similar essential oils and cannabis are until I realized that terpenes are similar to essential oils,” says Shuster, who is currently a team leader at the SUPERETTE Toronto facility.

When Shuster isn’t advocating the power of cannabis, he loves choreographing and performing in musicals across Canada. “I miss being part of a musical every day. I miss dancing all day, coming home and thinking more about dancing. But the cannabis industry won me over. You don’t see the camaraderie between budget tenders in many industries and I’m very proud to be a small part of it! “

Here she talks about how business works despite challenges, how customer preferences are developing in the face of a pandemic and which products are flying off the shelves.

Buying cannabis during lockdown

We make sure that conversations over the phone are as detailed as if the customer were in business with us – the shop even installed a second phone line. Due to the high sales, we are running out of some favorite products and we make sure that we are ready to make some suggestions to those who are experienced in the legal market that match what they know and love.

We miss having people in our business, but by adapting and developing new protocols we can make sure everyone is safe and still gets what they need.

What are Canadians looking for?

Since the lockdown, I’ve noticed a shift in the type of flowers people buy. We’re seeing an increase in the sativa flower department and the CBD strains. Another switch is vaping, the keyword being discreet. Some of us smoke wherever we are, but for those who can’t be that obvious, vapes are great choices. The smell is light and goes away so quickly that you don’t have to worry about what the neighbors might be thinking.

Popular vaping options

We see great things from Kolab. Strong strong varieties, taste profiles according to taste and consistent in every category. They each focus on a major strain of Sativa, Hybrid, and Indica, making it a viable option for someone who wants a couple of vapes to take home with them for various purposes. Vapes from Symbl are inexpensive and really good. They’re pretty new to the legal market, but people are already talking about their new 510 vape cartridges.

Products that fly off the shelves

Every now and then it comes down to a product that we don’t even have in stock. Carmel falls under this category. Customers called and asked about Carmel and its three varieties before I even knew all the details about their launch.

In addition, MTL Sage N Sour is definitely a store favorite and a personal obsession. It’s exactly what daytime smokers are looking for. Strongly tall, bright citrus and gasoline profiles and a stunning bud every time. When it comes to groceries, we see Wana gummies flying off the shelves in our store. There are so many flavors, different THC: CBD ratios, and they taste great. I look forward to AGCO giving them more gums per pack!
