Palatnikov, who was born in Hong Kong but fights outside of Las Vegas, said he used cannabis as a sleep aid and to deal with pain after his fights.

“I’m a big weed smoker. I’ve been smoking for 12 years, but I’m very controlled with that. I don’t smoke a month before my fight. I’m big on mushrooms, I’m big on natural things, psychedelics. I have had a lot of positive experiences with this stuff. Microdosing, things like that, ”Palatnikov said on BJPENN.com.

Palatnikov added that this is the first time he has spoken publicly about his cannabis use.

Other MMA athletes, such as brothers Diaz and Frank Shamrock, have also been open about their cannabis use during training and recovery.

In 2020, Toronto-born and veteran UFC fighter Elias Theodorou made history as the first professional athlete in the world to be granted an exemption for the therapeutic use of medicinal cannabis in competition. Theodorou treats bilateral neuropathic pain in the wrists and elbows with medicinal cannabis.

“My doctor thinks cannabis is right for me and as part of the process I had to exhaust all other first line drugs, whether opioids or other types of pain relievers, and the side effects were just as bad, if not worse, than the real thing Disease I have, ”he told TSN in 2018.

For Palatnikov, he believes that research into natural remedies like cannabis and psilocybin will further normalize the substances and advance them as a treatment option for athletes.

“There are now plenty of studies showing that psilocybin in magic mushrooms has very beneficial effects on brain tissue healing and neuron reconnection in the brain,” he said, emphasizing that the UFC and NFL are currently doing their own research on that Theme.

“This is all that will develop in the future of martial arts,” said Palantikov. “I’m telling you the results are there, the science is there. I am a proven factor in that. “
