Texas icon Willie Nelson turns 88 today and will celebrate Luck Summit: Planting the Seed at 4:20 pm with a keynote address at his cannabis conference

The goal of the conference is to destigmatize cannabis culture, reports Austin360. As part of that effort, Nelson shared several stories about his history of cannabis use during the week, including attending a session titled “A Contextual Retrospective of Willie Nelson’s Weed Story,” hosted by Abdullah Saeed and David Bienenstock from the Great Moments podcast in the weed story.

Austin360 rounded up some highlights from the interview, including Nelson’s first encounter with cannabis in a Fort Worth street bar in 1954.

Nelson, then 21 years old, was given a joint by friend and musician Fred Lockwood, who told him to “aim high and be someone”. It wasn’t until months later that Nelson actually took a deep enough breath to feel the effects.

Since then, Nelson has honed his smoking skills. So much so that Snoop Dogg said that Nelson is the only person on the planet who can “outsmart” him.

During a trip to Amsterdam in 2008, Nelson reportedly smoked so much pot of pot that Snoop was forced to bow, but not before the duo had finished their night with a Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Nelson has also long advocated the therapeutic properties of cannabis and credited it with saving his life and reducing his alcohol consumption. He’s so fond of the plant that he once smoked a joint on the roof of the White House with Chip Carter, Jimmy Carter’s son.

Carter later confirmed the story in the documentary Jimmy Carter: Rock & Roll President.

“When Willie Nelson wrote his autobiography, he confessed that he was smoking a pot at the White House one night while he was spending the night with me,” Carter told the People documentary. “And he says that his companion who shared the pot with him was one of the servants in the White House. That’s not entirely true – it was actually one of my sons whom he didn’t want to classify as a pot smoker like him. “

About a decade later, Nelson reportedly attempted to repeat the feat at the governor’s mansion in Texas.

Nelson and longtime friend Turk Pipkin were invited by outgoing Texas Governor Ann Richards. During a tour of the property, Nelson asked for access to the roof.

Pipkin suspects that Richards expected Nelson to try to get to the roof and kept the mansion locked.

“We pull on the window that leads to one of the small rooms up there, and it’s screwed down with about 1,000 screws. There’s no way we’re getting out of this thing, probably because Ann knew Willie was coming, ”Pipkin said.
